Trustees

The John Laing Charitable Trust (‘JLCT’) currently has nine Trustees: The Trustees meet formally up to four times during the year. In between meetings, established procedures are followed for decision making and approval of payments.

As a registered charity, JLCT abides by the rules of the Charity Commission and Charity Law.

  • Tim Foster

    JLCT Chair

    A highly experienced business lawyer who worked at the John Laing Group. Having graduated from Cambridge University in law, Tim specialised in business law across a range of industries. He joined the John Laing Group in 2013 as in-house lawyer; he retired in 2019.

    He had been an active member of the Trust Board since 2018 and his contributions have been invaluable in many areas.

    Tim said it was 'an honour and a privilege' to take over as Chair from Sir Martin Laing in 2022. He sees his mission as Chair as “continued focus on the quality of everything we do; our dedicated Welfare services, our excellent major and small grants programmes, great teamwork across our staff and trustees and strong governance for the Trust Board into the future, all anchored in the guiding values of Sir John Laing”.

  • Christopher Laing OBE

    Vice Chair

    Christopher joined John Laing plc in 1971. After a number of projects in Scotland he moved to Rochdale Central Area Redevelopment and then to Milton Keynes where he managed part of the Central Shopping Centre contract.

    In 1998 he was appointed Environmental Director for John Laing plc since when he has maintained a keen interest in Sustainable Construction and environmental matters. He retired from John Laing plc in 2002.

    He was President of The Chartered Institute of Building in 1993, served as High Sheriff of Hertfordshire in 2001/2002 and is Vice-President of the National Playing Fields Association (now known as Fields in Trust). He has been a trustee of the British College of Osteopathy and was a Trustee of The Lord's Taverners until 2010. He was appointed Patron of The Chiltern Centre in June 2022

  • Chris Waples

    Trustee

    Chris has been a trustee board member since 2007, nominated by John Laing Group where he worked as an Executive Director until 2019.

    His extensive business career has involved global experience of managing the acquisition, construction and divestment of infrastructure projects. He now focuses on a Non-Executive career to help other businesses succeed.

  • Alex Laing Gregory

    Trustee

    Alex is the great granddaughter of Sir John and has been a JLCT trustee since 2016.

    She takes a gretab interest in the welfare side of the Trust and has worked closely with the John Laing retirement clubs for 20 years. She took over as clubs’ president in 2025 and is keen to meet as many club members as she can whilst attending events including AGMs and lunches.

    She is an experienced trustee and currently serves on the board of two other charitable foundations, with executive responsibility on both.

  • Lynn Krige

    Trustee

    Lynn Krige has spent an illustrious career in high level finance and continues to work as a Chief Financial Officer.

    She has served on the JLCT Board for more than a decade and previously worked for the John Laing Group as CFO.

  • Stewart Laing

    Trustee

    Stewart has been a JLCT trustee since 2016.

    He is also a Vice President of the John Laing Retirement Clubs.

    He has worked for a London based sports charity as a Special Needs Teacher as part of their management team. This year he has also joined the board of Trustees for a London based Youth Club for disabled people.

    He enjoys a challenge, including swimming the Channel to raise money for charity.

  • Pam Orchard

    Trustee

    The latest recruit to the JLCT Trustee Board was chosen following a full consultation in 2024.

    Pam Orchard brings 30 years of experience in the voluntary sector and is the current the Chief Executive Officer of The Connection at St Martins. Pam has also held senior roles in homelessness charities since 2003 including Edinburgh Cyrenians (Deputy CEO).

    Pam also takes on occasional projects to support charities to confront and overcome difficult situations and provide coaching/ mentoring for senior leaders.

    A key aspect of JLCT’s work in which Pam has experience is ‘young people’ having run a youth work programme at the YMCA with the Princes Trust.
